Born in New Orleans in 1926 and raised in Chicago, Ed Clark emerged in the 1950s as a pioneer of the New York School. Over seven decades, his experiments with pure color, abstract form, and the materiality of paint produced an oeuvre of striking originality, extending the language of American abstraction. Clark holds an important place in modern and contemporary art: in the late 1950s, he was among the first American artists to exhibit a shaped canvas, an innovation that continues to resonate.
